The Fracture Line Series: We Were Never Meant to Be Tame

This song wasn’t written because I suddenly found my courage.

It was written because I finally realized how much of myself I’d been editing away.

Not all at once. Never all at once.

The shrinking started in childhood, long before I understood what it would cost me. I learned to soften my voice, hide what hurt, and pay attention to how much of myself was welcome.

Too much. Too loud. Too sensitive. Too whatever.

The words changed. The lesson stayed the same: something about me needed to be smaller.

Those lessons followed me. Into crowded rooms. Into relationships. Into all the moments when I swallowed what I wanted to say because being accepted seemed to depend on it.

It happened the way it does for so many of us—one compromise, one apology, one swallowed opinion at a time. You learn to smile when you’re hurting. To soften your voice. To make yourself easier to understand. Easier to like. Easier to keep.

Eventually, you wake up and wonder why your own reflection feels like a stranger.

That was the fracture.

Realizing how I had been treated. Recognizing how much I had learned to hide. Beginning to question the things I had been told about myself for so long that they sounded like my own thoughts.

We Were Never Meant to Be Tame isn’t about becoming someone new.

It’s about remembering the person who existed before the world convinced you that your wildness needed fixing.

There is anger in this song. There is grief. There is also a voice that had survived every attempt to quiet it, finally getting room to speak.

“You called it too much, I call it my roar.”

I was beginning to hear myself again.

And I could look back at the version of me who had done what she could to get through and say:

“Thank you for surviving. I’ll take it from here.”

This is where the trilogy begins. With recognition—and the first steps toward trusting my own voice.

If you’ve ever felt like you had to earn your place by becoming smaller, quieter, or easier to carry, this song was written with you in mind.
